We know that moving from primary school to secondary school can feel a bit scary for both children and their parents.  Secondary schools are often much bigger, and it’s easy to worry about getting lost.  Children also go from having one teacher to having lots of different teachers, which can feel strange.

This year, primary and secondary schools in Leicester City were invited to special workshops where they talked about how to help children feel ready for Year 7.

Primary schools shared what children and parents worry about most.  secondary schools shared helpful tips and advice for families to make the move easier.

Top tips to help your child get ready for Year 7

  • Try on the school uniform early
This helps your child feel more comfortable wearing it.
  • Go to any induction days or summer schools
These help your child learn about the new school and ask questions.
  • Practise the journey to school
Try walking or travelling the route a few times. Let your child be a bit more independent each time. If possible, they could walk with a friend. You can also use a free phone tracker app to check they get there safely.
  • Pack school bags the night before
This makes mornings easier and less rushed.
  • Look at the school’s website together
Talk about the lessons, lunch menus, and after-school clubs.
  • Set time aside for homework
Having a quiet time and place for homework helps your child stay on track.
  • Stay positive!
It’s normal for children to feel nervous. Let them know it’s okay to feel that way. Remind them they are ready and you believe they will do really well.

Additional Support

Despite all the support on offer, a small number of children might still find the move from primary school to secondary school tricky.  If this applies to your child, don’t worry.

Their current primary school will have communicated any concerns to the secondary school.  If your child needs more help than most, the school can apply for extra funding to support them.
