Day nurseries provide a safe and structured environment for children under five where they can play, learn skills, be part of a group and make friends while their parents work or study.

Generally nurseries are opening throughout the day, most weeks of the year.  Part-time places are often available.

Ofsted registration

All childcare providers caring for children under the age of eight for more than two hours a day, for more than 14 days a year must be registered with Ofsted on either the Early Years Register or the compulsory part of the Childcare Register.

Requirements for day nurseries

Registered day nurseries must ensure that:

  • all staff submit to a DBS check
  • a first aid-qualified member of staff is present at all times
  • at least 50% of staff have the relevant qualifications
  • the premises have passed necessary inspection

Funded places in day nurseries

Most day nurseries in Leicester offer places for children who have funding under the funded early education entitlement.  The majority of nurseries offer up to 15 hours.  An increasing number offer 30 hours of funded early years provision for eligible children.  Some day nurseries are approved to offer up to 15 hours of funded early education for eligible 2 year olds.
