A SEND unit is a special classroom in a mainstream school.  It is for children who need more support with learning, talking, moving, or behaviour.

Children in SEND units do most of their learning there and may be waiting for a special school place to be available.

Who can go to a SEND Unit?

Only children with a Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) can go to a SEND unit.

The local authority will help decide which school and SEND unit is best for the child and will involve the family when talking about what they think is right for the child.

What help do children get in a unit?

In a SEND unit, children will get:

  • Smaller classes with more adults
  • Special teachers and teaching assistants
  • Work that is just right for their level
  • Extra help with talking, moving, or understanding
