CHaOS Science Day

Sunday 21 July at 12 noon - 5pm at New Walk Museum & Art Gallery

We are Cambridge Hands-On Science (CHaOS) – a group of students from the University of Cambridge, who are keen to share with you our passion for science!

We’re driving a van filled with our own fun experiments around the country, and every day we visit a new venue, hoping to reach out to as many people as possible.

We have demonstrations covering all the sciences, including Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Maths and more, and we’re always thinking of fun ways to bring some knowledge and interest to you.

Our experiments are all ‘Hands-On’, so you can come along and learn by doing, and hopefully enjoy it too. Our demonstrators are also prepped to be quizzed by the public and hold engaging conversations about their subject with you – ask us anything (see how much we really know!

Fairy-tale Fun day

Railway Gala Day

Saturday 3 August 11am - 4pm at Abbey Pumping Station

Another chance to ride on the only public narrow gauge railway in Leicester, Ride behind our very own Bagnall steam locomotive built in December 1918 for supplying the troops in the WW1 trenches. Help to celebrate its 100th Birthday. View the other site narrow gauge locomotives which will be out on show. Refreshments available at the LMTA café. Admission to museum free (Small Charge for Train Ride).

Helen Day: Ladybird Books Talk

Sunday 4 August 2pm at New Walk Museum & Art Gallery

"That Won't Do!”: Keeping Ladybird books up to date in the 1970s.

Ladybird books were to be found wherever there were children between the 1960s, 70s and 80s. But British society was changing fast. In this talk, Helen Day looks at the often-amusing attempts to keep the books up to date over the decades. She shows how changes to the illustrations provide a series of fascinating snapshots of evolving technology, ideas and attitudes over the later years of the 20th century.

Exhibitions

The Wonderful World of the Ladybird Book Artists
13 July – 1 September 2019 - New Walk Museum & Art Gallery

This exhibition for children of all ages reveals original artworks of the talented artists behind the iconic Ladybird books.

Through these remarkable pictures the exhibition will enter the wonderful realm of Ladybird taking a voyage of discovery through the book themes of history, science, nature and fairy tales as well as the world of Peter and Jane.

Coming Home: The Richard III Portrait from the National Portrait Gallery
At New Walk Museum and Art Gallery until 22 September 2019

One of the most popular pictures in the National Portrait Gallery Collection, the iconic portrait of Richard III is now on display in Leicester as part of the national COMING HOME project.

The work is one of 50 portraits of iconic individuals being lent to places across the UK with which they are most closely associated. Working in partnership with the King Richard III Visitor Centre and Leicester Cathedral, the exhibition will explore the story of King Richard III and his famous rediscovery in a Leicester carpark.
