Improving your self esteem

Self esteem is how we see ourselves and the way we feel about who we are.

 

As a teenager, there's lots to deal with, your body is changing, you're trying to find where you fit in, and you want to be accepted by our friends. With all of this,  it can be easy to compare yourself with others and not feel so great about yourselves. 

 

What are the signs of low self esteem?

 

  • Feeling like you have little worth
  • Feeling unloved
  • Being overwhelmed with fear and negative thoughts
  • Feeling depressed
  • Thinking that the world is a bad place
  • Having unrealistic expectations about your goals
  • Being drawn into relationships that aren't good for you

 

 What can I do to improve my self esteem?

 

  • Spend time with people who like you and care about you

  • Talk to someone you trust about how you are feeling 

  • Avoid being around people who put you down or treat you badly as the will make you feel low about yourself

  • Some people find it helps to express how they feel in other ways, - writing, compiling poems, dancing, drawing, painting - anything that works for you to get your feelings out

  • Find something you like doing and develop your talents, we are all good at something

  • Take up some exercise or sport as being active releases natural chemicals in your body that makes you feel good about yourself 

  • Make good choices for yourself, and don't let others make your choices for you or pressurise you into doing something you don't want to do

  • Always do what you believe is right

  • Be true to yourself and your values, don't just follow the crowd

Bullies Out provides help, support and information to individuals, schools, youth and community settings affected by bullying.

 

SupportLine

SupportLine provide online support and a telephone helpline offering confidential emotional support to any individual, children, young adults and adults.

 

The Samaritans

The Samaritans provide 24 hour confidential emotional support.
